NEW RULES FOR PROTECTING GOVERNMENT UNCLASSIFIED DATA - ENFORCED JANUARY 1, 2018
Federal government contractors who house, store, process, and/or transmit federal government data, in Non-Federal Information Systems and Organizations, will be subject to NIST 800-171 regulation and DFARS 252.204-7012. Federal defense contracts must show proof they understand this new regulation and are in full compliance to protect CUI federal government data.
"Only information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to law, federal regulations, and governmentwide policies may be designated as CUI. The CUI program is designed to address several deficiencies in managing and protecting unclassified information to include inconsistent markings, inadequate safeguarding, and needless restrictions, both by standardizing procedures and by providing common definitions through a CUI Registry."
